The Issue
Black people are a captured elected of the Democratic Party which limits our ability to pursue policies that are beneficial to Black people that go beyond the standards set by the Democratic Party establishment. Having candidates be challenged publicly by parties to their left will help build the capacity to help 3rd parties grow, and creates a opportunity to hold the Democratic Party accountable from its left for its policies. Maryland has a chance to led the country on a path toward what a multiparty system could look like. As of now 3rd party candidates are not given the same access to public platforms to address voters as those candidates that are are affiliated with either the Democratic or Republican party. Expanding 3rd party candidates access to debate stages is a small step toward developing a multiparty system.
We urge Maryland Public Television to invite all candidates for governor that appear on the general election ballot to participate in a candidate forum for the gubernatorial election.
